This course includes the updated six core elements contained in the New York State 1993 Syllabus, which meets the training requirements of Chapter 786 of the Laws of New York, 1992, for infection control.  Mandated professionals include physicians, physician assistants/specialist assistants, dentists, dental hygienists, RNs, LPNs, podiatrists, and optometrists.


IV THERAPY

This course will review the purpose of IV therapy, including procedures, use of fluids, types and proper use of access devices.  Types of IV tubing and their use along with infection control of IV sites will be discussed.  Participants will learn IV incompatibilities and drugs that shouldn't be mixed.  Participants will practice IV starts and handing the equipment.  This course is designed for LPNs and RNs needing a refresher course in IV therapy.


MAINTAINING SKIN INTEGRITY

The maintenance of the skin as the protective layer of the body is essential for all patients/residents.  Promoting skin integrity is an around-the-clock responsibility.  This can be challenging but is vital to overall health, particularly in the elderly.  Not only is the skin the body's largest organ, but it is susceptible to breakdown and infection if it isn't cared for properly.  This workshop is designed for nursing assistants, home health aides, LPNs, RNs, and other healthcare providers and caregivers who are interested in understanding the significance of the skin, its appropriate care, and maintenance.  There will be emphasis on pressure/ulcers/decubitus ulcers.

This course is for healthcare professionals, cardiac technicians, respiratory technicians, and emergency medical technicians who are exposed to caring for patients on cardiac monitors.  They will review information in regards to electrical activity of the heart and how that activity is recorded.  The basic dysrhythmias along with immediate nursing care will be explained.  Prerequisite:  Some familiarity with electrocardiograph equipment.

NEUROMOTOR DISORDERS

This program is to familiarize long term care personnel with some of the neuromotor disorders they may encounter.  They will be exposed to basic anatomy and physiology in order to establish a base of knowledge from which the presenter can build upon.  Each of the disease processes will be described, in addition to signs and symptoms the staff may observe in their populations.  The major focus of this program will be to examine strategies and techniques for dealing with and caring for these clients in the long term care setting.  This program is intended for long term care personnel and ALC units, including RNs, LPNs, and nursing assistants.
